Due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) most of the countries have imposed lockdowns and educational institutions are closed and modes of learning and teaching are shifted to online and blended education. In this scenario, Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has provided broader guidelines to address educational challenges of students and faculty, following these guidelines Karakoram International University has rapidly operationalized and streamlined the Learning Management system in main campus and its sub-campuses. KIU-LMS provides versatile support for teaching & learning, communication & collaboration, content & media integration and administration.

Instructors and learners share knowledge, collaborate and engage in a wider spectrum of technology enabled learning experience well supported by an intuitive & modern user interface. KIU-LMS is an indigenously effort in a very short time by IT Task Force (Development team lead by Dr. Aftab Ahmed Khan and Training and Education Lead by Mr. Khalid Amin under the direct leadership of VC) which was tasked to minimize the educational loss of students due to Covid-19 situation.

Dear Students, Faculty Members and Staff ‏السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُم وَرَحْمَةاَللهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ
We hope that you all and your parents and families are safe and healthy during the COVID-19, which is a pandemic of unprecedented dimensions. To cope with the challenges associated with this deadly virus, KIU has developed two pronged strategies in line with the HEC guidelines. Firstly, ensuring safety and security of all at the Campus and Sub Campuses and secondly securing your future and continuing the teaching & learning process, through all possible means. In this context an online & Blended Education policy has been developed and State of the Art Learning Management System (LMS) has been deployed with the untiring efforts and IT Task Force. I have my high appreciation to the task force for their wonderful job.
The LMS provides a variety of teaching and learning tools both online and offline, which has become an integral part of the education at KIU from Spring Semester,2020 onwards. The IT Help Desk has been providing regular trainings to the faculty, staff and Class Reps of various departments and programs. The faculty, staff and IT Task force has been advised to respond to the quarries of the students on real time basis in the transition phase. I am happy to learn that the number of students, utilizing the LMS and Online education portal is increasing.
We certainly understand, the challenges of internet connectivity and speed in the Gilgit-Baltistan and particularly in the remote areas, where the non-availability of regular power supply further worsen the situations. But we are closely working with the SCO for improving the internet quality where possible. At the same time, we are also exploring other options like establishing of facility centers, village student representative and distance learning, besides the Online Education. These options, together is called Blended Education, which has become the norm of modern education.
We deployed the LMS in test phase during May,2020, which has shown highly encouraging results. Now during June,2020 we will start selective online courses/programs under different departments. In case the Universities are opened on 15th July, then we will complete the remaining courses at the Campus through a compressed short semester from July 16 to 30th Sep,2020. The Fall Semester 2020 shall start in Oct 2020 Insha Allah. However, in case of further extension in University closure, KIU will have no other option to offer the entire Semester Spring 2020, through blended Education model, to save the precious time of the students. Please note the students admitted prior to Fall 2018 are already lagging behind the rest of the country by one semester due to delayed admission. KIU team will endeavor to ensure quality education and access to all students through various options of blended learning. We however request you all to take maximum possible benefit from this system to save your precious time.
A renowned educationist Bernard Kelvin Clive said “Ten years from now it won’t really matter what school you attended, whether online or offline education, free or paid, widely known or not, what will matter most is what you learned, the skills you acquired and how you leveraged it. Use every opportunity to better yourself.” We pray for the health of our students, faculty, staff and their families for health and safety from all kinds of diseases and the situations of COVID-19 comes to normal soon, so that University is opened and we can resume our academic and research pursuits Together. (Ameen)
